How to Pick the Right 3PL Without a 6-Month Evaluation Process

Most brands pick a 3PL the slow, painful way: a dozen intro calls, a stack of proposals that all look the same, and a gut decision they second-guess for a year. There's a faster path.

Start with your actual requirements, not theirs

Before you talk to anyone, write down what you truly need: order volume, SKU count, special handling, where your customers are, what systems you run. Half the 3PLs on your list will disqualify themselves the moment you hold them against real numbers.

What actually separates 3PLs

  • Location — close to your inbound port and your customers.
  • Capacity — room to grow, not just room for today.
  • Tech / WMS — does their system talk to yours cleanly?
  • Specialty handling — if you need it and they fake it, you'll find out the hard way.
  • Pricing structure — watch the per-pick and storage fees, not just the headline rate.
  • SLAs — and whether they'll actually put them in writing.

The relationships that fail

Almost every 3PL breakup traces back to a mismatch that was visible up front — a warehouse that was too small, a tech stack that couldn't integrate, a price that ballooned with accessorials. The vetting work exists to surface those mismatches before you sign, not after.

Or hand the search off

This is exactly the kind of work that's worth delegating to someone who does it constantly, has a vetted shortlist ready, and isn't paid by the 3PL. You skip the frogs and go straight to the two or three that actually fit.
